The Joint Laboratory strives to generate fundamental scientific knowledge in the fields of optoelectronics and light-harvesting devices through publishing papers, applying for patents, and licensing technology developed. The Joint Laboratory has a strong record in both basic and translational research and will continue to excel in understanding and developing photoactive materials with designer properties. It has also nurtured a number of highly-skilled researchers currently at work in academia or industry working on optoelectronics, renewable energies, photo-catalysis and photoactive materials.

The HKU-CAS Joint Laboratory on New Materials was established in 1997 and is dedicated to providing young scientists from CAS and researchers at the University of Hong Kong with a platform for interactive and/or collaborative research projects, encouraging interdisciplinary research activities, and promoting international and domestic cooperation in the field of functional molecular materials. In 2001, HKU designated a total area of 240 square meters for use by the Joint Laboratory. See below for a video introduction of the Joint Laboratory.
